The Otočec Castle is located close to Novo Mesto in the Dolenjska region and on one of the islands of the Krka river. Its image has been formed throughout the centuries. The name Otočec comes from the Freising bishops. The castle owners were called the De Werde Island Knights or Islanders. In the middle of the 14th century, the building was expanded and got its L shape. The castle had been additionally fortified after the Turkish pillaging in the year 1471. In the second half of the 16th century, it began to get its renaissance image. In the second half of the 17th century, the castle building, among other modifications, had arched hallways on the ground floor and both floors of the south wing added to it. During the 2nd world war, the partisans had burnt the castle and that is also when the priceless archive was burnt, one which hid many interesting stories from the rich history of this beautiful castle. The castle now hosts the luxurious Hotel Grad Otočec and the castle restaurant with a top of the line culinary offer.
